Please Clarify

Please can someone clarify why the word 'gay' is automatically banned on the in-game chat?

It's not offensive, it's not a swear word, it's a sexual orientation. If straight, bi, pan and demi aren't banned, why the heck is gay?

If the word gay isn't allowed to be used on forums, there is also a problem which I didn't know existed. It could even come across as homophobic ( i know the intention is to stop insults but come on, people will insult each other regardless of whether or not gay is banned).

 

It's an insult to a group of people and will get you banned, the other words probably don't get you banned because no one takes offense to them and there more so slurs and gibberish then an insult.

 

Exactly as Boss says. To cause offense to someone, you call them gay or a homo; it's not seen as offensive to call someone a hetro is it?!?

Use some common sense before posting....

 

I'm not disputing that it can be used as an insult BUT anything can be used as an insult. It's unfair to ban the word gay because some ignorant players use it as an insult. People use the word noob as an insult (much more than any other word) and yet it hasn't been banned.

Burkey, by the tone of your last sentence I can tell you are being condescending which someone can take offence at. You can't ban people using spaces to negate the automatic ban system. If a CM/Mod sees a person using gay in a derogatory way in chat then they can ban them. Otherwise it's unfair and unjust to have it automatically banned.

 

Sorry Sparta, yes I see the second sentence can be offensive just like gay.

But yes if someone says in chat "i dont have gf, im gay" then yes it's wrong to instant ban but the CM's are barely on chat nowadays (u shud see all the crap on GB1 Global chat for the past 5 hours!!) so D.O. using technology instead of humans.....

 

Since it is used as an insult to a rather... over the charts level, it is not allowed in chat. This is the reason why.

And burkey, yeah, they even changed System kicks to "kick by administrator" just to trick people, which only the noobs have fallen for it.

I was banned in roughly this instance (only for a minute but still):
Player: "What did you get up to last night?"
Me: (tried typing) "I was invited to my first gay club, good fun, u?"

I suppose my answer will be that like most other video game companies, instead of addressing the homophobia being perpetuated in their games, they just ban the word and turn a blind eye.
Microsoft and Blizzard have both been sued previously for banning people in their games for stating their sexuality as gay through the reason of using the word gay.

Wouldn't it be an AMAZING publicity opportunity for BigPoint/DarkOrbit to be open about sexuality and actually implement a safe environment that doesn't rely on an outdated auto-ban system. Obviously some words (swear words) should be banned but the usual space in between the word gets around it - outdated.

 

Um no. They play it safe AND smart, and avoid it. How would you feel if DO did go through with this, someone says they are gay in chat, the get flamed without a ban and this person does something to themselves? This is why games avoid these words. Well one reason, So it is not hard to understand their reasoning.

 

I wonder if "under-age sex" is an immediate ban on chat.... ?

In regards to the word "gay" it is in the filter as its primary use in game is to insult others, I believe that it is just a kick and not an actual ban however. If it were removed from the filter then it would still attract bans related to context and they would be a LOT longer.

If seen by a mod then you will certainly earn a lengthy ban for that comment.
