[SC] TAS Scoring System

    What is the meaning of life? Why are we here? How the hell does the TAS scoring system work?

    These are the 3 biggest questions known to humanity, today we try and figure out how to answer one of them!

    Just to fill people in on whats what incase they're lost and not sure what this is, TAS = Training Arena Season and the "Pre-Season" started today for people to practice and get used to it.
    There is a new scoring system for the TAS and I can't figure out how it works, neither can anyone else I've spoken to who tried it. The old scoring system was pretty simple as follows '(Victories / Total Duels) x Victories = Score', however this new scoring system literally makes zero sense on the face of it.

    When the Pre-Season started an hour ago I thought I would give it a go and did 11 duels, which resulted in 11 wins, a brag I know.

    The results of my matches were as follows:

    1. 2 Fights won / 0 lost / +5 Score
    2. 2 / 1 / +5
    3. 2 / 1 / +5
    4. 2 / 0 / +6
    5. 2 / 0 / +3 (same guy as no3)
    6. 2 / 0 / +2 (same guy as no3 & no5)
    7. 2 / 0 / +5
    8. 2 / 0 / 0
    9. 2 / 0 / 0 (same guy as no8)
    10. 2 / 0 / +5
    11. 2 / 0 / 0

    So that should be a total of +36 as my score, which is shown correct in my TA window. It says I am currently ranked 4th in the client ... however on my backpage it says I have 47 points and that I am currently ranked 1st despite people below me having 100+, so something has gone wrong there.

    The 0 score reward for winning confuses me a lot as well. I'm using an UFE Aegis, all lv16 equipment etc so naturally all my opponents were UFE as well, the ones I got a reward of 0 for were no better or worse than the people I got +5 for. Yet it was an entire waste of my time and ammo to fight those 3 particular matches.


    It gets even weirder. When the new score system was introduced a couple days ago, presumably just as a pre-test I tried out a few fights then as well.
    I lost my first match 1-2, I then fought the same guy and won 2-0 ... the system gave me +100 points for winning. I then won a few more and got between +1 and +6.


    So from my experience of today's initial pre-season and then the testing phase a couple days ago I think the scoring system is based on your accounts win / loss rate vs your enemies win / loss rate.
    Except this is a big issue if this is the case since is's very, very easy to abuse.



    If I continued my flawless run from today then since I am only averaging +3.3 points per fight then that would mean it would take me roughly 30 matches in order to hit 100 points.
    However if I deliberately lost my first few matches in order to secure myself a 0% win rate and then won vs a player who had a very good win rate, I would be rewarded a huge amount of points for beating a player with such a better win / loss rate than myself.


    Again, assuming this is the case, I have 2 UFE accounts. What is to stop me using my GE1 to win lots of matches and get almost perfect win rates, whilst using my GB2 to deliberately lose it's matches? Then when just using both accounts to find each other in TA and letting my GB2 beat my GE1 a few times and secure some insane amount of points. Seems like a nice and easy way to win without using much ammo at all ...
    I understand if mods wish to edit this part out as it seems extremely easy to game the system for this event :(

    Obviously the data I have collected is limited so that is why I decided to bring up a thread so hopefully more people can add in their results so we get a better idea of it. It also lets people know of the seemingly blatant flaws in the system ... without even beginning to talk about the people who abuse small ships like a liberator etc to get easy opponent.

    Hi,
    Thanks for reporting the issue with the point rewards. Getting 0 points for winning was not what we expected. We have found the problem and we will make an update soon to fix this.

    You are right on the values that we are taking in account for the rewards: Your win/loss rate and the one from your enemy, but also the current score of your enemy and your own. The system is implemented in a way that shouldn't be possible to exploit. Yes, you could hit 100 score if you were really bad performing for a while and then you win a match against someone who had an awesome performance. But that will happen only once, as after that you will have a better score and a win rate higher than 0%. So, losing on purpose to then get a huge score doesn't pay out. Probably you would made better by playing hard.
    Also 100 is the highest reward you can get for a match in any case.


    Of course we invite you all to try to exploit the score system and report any problem you find :)

    There is also a bug on how the rankings are displayed in the website. This is just a display issue that we will fix also soon. But the rewards will be correctly booked for the players with the highest score. You can orientate yourself by the information in the client side meanwhile.

    Ah ok thanks for the clarification ^^

    Would it be possible to start everyone in the TAS with an imaginary win rate? Say 20 wins / 20 loss? The only reason I ask this is because of how easy it is to gain +100 so early on after a couple of fights by going from 0% win rate to 50% in 2 games etc.
    I understand this could just be a one off but if the average score per match was only +5 for a user who had done really well and then somebody who just happened to lose their 1st and then win their 2nd game jumps so far ahead it would be pretty frustrating.

    At least if everyone started if with an imaginary score of 20 wins / 20 losses they would actually have to lose a fair amount of matches before getting the opportunity to win +100.

    Edit:
    Would it also be possible to stop people abusing small ships in order to lower their Equipment Score and get easier opponents? Something like, if a user has over 30 LF4 on their account but they are using anything between pheonix - bigboy to find weaker enemies in TA then the score won't count?

    just want to double check - even though the backpage says im ranked 20's but i have the highest score out of everyone i would still get the #1 spot rewards?

    Edit:

    i do like okapis ideas to have people have an imaginary win/loss record so its not easy to get the higher scores.
    for this reason- someone does 50 matches, wins them all and gets 2 points each for 100 points.
    then some guy loses a few wins gets 100 points, even though 100 is highest and you can only get it once doesnt stop him from getting scores 50 + for example.
    he could win 1 match get the 100, lose a few more then win and get a 60+ score and be in first place with 2 wins and he could just keep doing this and get 20 - 60 + point scores and no one would even be able to catch up to him. especially if you have a really good win record, then you only get 1 or 2 points a match and would never catch up.

  6. From what I've seen that doesn't work. I went in earlier in a not even FE phoenix, got paired with an UFE. 1-shot obviously :( my poor pnut. There doesn't seem to be a good semblance of balance in TA. I thought that maybe my 2 lf-4 and havoc were offsetting it but I took those off and then was paired with a 1-star in my egg...:eek:

    Ah well that's good news, I keep on seeing a group of UFE remove their drone designs and enter TA as Piranhas or Liberators so assumed it still works x)

    Nevermind it was a fluke it would seem. Just did it in my citadel, got paired with an ufe who killed me. Then went in a phoenix, and got paired with a nostromo with 3 flax, and a leonov with 2 flax... Guess those ufe didn't die :O
