    Can somebody please explain what this PET gear actually does as the in-game description is useless, thanks.

    I believe it provides your pet some protection during attack when using instashield. Instashield normally protects just your ship but with the CGM-02 gear, it gives a 'chance' for avoiding damage from attacks on the Pet for 3 seconds.

    Not really much value for most people other than to keep the Pet in the fight. In my opinion of course.

    Yep, exactly as Iron said.
    A well equipped player will be able to utilize the PET for much extra damage when needed, perfect for PvP. Every extra bit can give you an edge.
