    hello,

Please note I am trying to understand what is happening and I may not I have all of my facts correct due to a lack of knowledge please correct what I have wrong. I have however done some research on the topic. So a few questions about the DDoS (distributed denial-of-service ) and DoS (denial of service) attacks that have been affecting me and other players in DO:

    1. When a DDoS/DoS attack starts does/can it collect in depth data on the target sight as well. Simpler put can the attacker see in the window at what’s happening in the room. DO says our information is safe, quote “Please note that Denial of Service Attacks do not endanger user data of any kind”.

    2. Data of any kind? Does that refer to data that is personal information like account info and billing info. Does this include computer, router and or network addresses that do not reveal personal info but are used to transmit the data?

    3. It is to my knowledge that the attacks are meant to slow down disrupt and or stop service/data transmission through the internet to the target site. If DO is being attacked at the same time I am playing the game can the attackers target me directly as well being that I am engaged in exchanging data via playing the game? I will re word to help clarify, can the attackers see me/my ip address etc... then target me when I am not logged in to DO, but still using the internet?

    4. It does not look like much can be done from what I have read due to there being so many different types of DDoS attacks and not all counter measures work for every attack. First a determination of what type of attack is being made then applying the correct counter measure. Is this going to be fixed can it be fixed or is this the new way of life from here on out?

    5. Is there any the player can do to help improve the game play experience during such an attack?

Thank you in advanced for your reply,
    fusion

A DDoS attack is literally just someone sending lots and lots of data to a IP to overload it and slow / crash the site, it does not collect data in any way. A sort a simple way to think of it is imagine you owned a very small website that could normally handle maybe 100 people on it at once and then all of a sudden 100,000 people went to your site, it would crash, except in a DDoS it's not actual people its just a load of information being spammed at the server. So your information is indeed safe.

You are right in saying they are hard to stop since different parts of the site could be attacked to achieve the same result of slowing / crashing the site. I expect it will be fixed eventually however there is no immediate and quick solution but it has been improving, most of the attacks happen just before JPA and last JPA only a few servers went down.

    Hello there,

Okapi32 has provided a clear and correct answer that i don't feel requires any further expansion upon.

I shall leave the thread open incase you have any further questions regarding these attacks, however please be assured that all your information, both account and personal is completely safe.

thanks for the reply guys this does clear up some questions and yes i do have more questions. am i sure there will be more to follow.

    1. If DO is being attacked at the same time I am playing the game can the attackers target me directly as well being that I am engaged in exchanging data via playing the game? I will re word to help clarify, can the attackers see me/my ip address etc... then target me when I am not logged in to DO, but still using the internet? All this happening while my personal information is safe.

    2. Is there any the player can do to help improve the game play experience during such an attack?

  5. 1.) No, they will not. The attack is simply an overload of data, the attackers won't be able to access anything unless they are advanced hackers.

2.) There is really nothing you can do. These attacks slow down BP's connection with DO, which then affects the players.

fusion82, As stated above, the attacks are specific to overloading the Dark Orbit servers and are, in a way, a one way attack. Lots of data going to a specific IP, but not retrieving any data.
As a player, there is nothing you can do during a DDOS episode. Support has been diligently working on isolating the attacks as they appear and working on countermeasures to prevent new ones.

    Best regards,

You're being (flooded) with PKT DATA! You can use a very useful tool from EA website, it's called a (UOTRACE) this tool allows you to see each and every service connected through your ISP and helps you understand where you're losing PKT data and also who is flooding you with PKT data. It is very easy and has a clear understanding of how to use it. Hope this helps
