  1. Ok, so the FPS issue everyone bangs on about, and all suffer with, has been around for sometime. Everyone has tried numerous browsers, Chrome, FireFox, Opera, and other masses of code and programming goodness. Graphics Drivers are updated, Flash Player is constantly updated, Java is always on the move, Browsers update faster than Jaguar can punch out a new vehicle. But did any think to check the hardware itself?

After many many many many tweaks, mixtures of settings, downgraded of drivers etc, the problem on my system has finally been found.

It was all my RAM timings in the main BIOS via Del/F2 or whatever your key is (When you first boot up your system and get the onscreen POST).

Mine were originally set to auto, so the system automatically tries to work out the optimal timings to use based on my overclocked Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.8Ghz (Stock 2.4Ghz).

Before applying my changes, DarkOrbit contained a horrible stutter and massive FPS drop when doing the slightest task, maybe one Interceptor on screen, and the FPS would drop by half.

After applying my changes, I now happily have a constant FPS of 55 - 61, even in the busiest situations in the DarkOrbit universe.

Core Speed 2790.54Mhz (Equating to 2.8Ghz)

Previous RAM timings were 6-6-6-18, now manually set at 5-5-5-15, resulting in much more rapid RAM in terms of communicating with the CPU. Default speed for my RAM is 400Mhz, but BIOS has slowed it down to 387Mhz due to the high FSB ratio and CPU overclock.

So this is my little message to fellow players who get an FPS problem, and throw the blame at DarkOrbit or Bigpoint. I myself do this, I don't deny it, but from time to time, I will investigate my own side of the problem, and try to determine what the true cause is.

Lets not forget though, keeping Flash Player, Graphics Drivers, Windows, Browsers, Java, and anything else up-to-date will also most always help you on your way to solving your FPS issues in games such as DarkOrbit.

Some people are lucky to escape or evade the drastic FPS issue, but for those who don't, consider mucking around a bit, you aswell may find the cause of your problems.

NOTE: All tweaks and settings I modify are done through my own knowledge and experience in computer hardware and internal settings. Please, if you don't know what your doing, consult someone who does, and don't risk harming your system from damage.

NOTE II: After overclocking PC components or changing vital settings, ALWAYS run a stress test or benchmark for a few hours or overnight BEFORE playing your favourite games, this will determine if your system is stable with the new credentials (Stress Test or Benchmarking tools include OCCT, Furmark, or Prime95).

    Thank you for reading.

I have found 5-5-5-15 worked very well on my old intel CPU. (Was a pentium T4500). My new timings are below, yes they look slow, however the timings are perfect for my CPU for some reason, dont ask why...Just go with the flow :p. My old fps was about 40-50. Now constant 60 (Locked).

CPU is Idling in that pic :p. But yeah it seems to work very well. Little Utilization on anything, before i fiddled around with the timings i did used to get spikes of 4fps, now they are gone (Mostly, still get a tiny bit of lag in massive batles, and in d.o...massive battles dont really exist much on gb1 :(
