Why is my screen indicator on my minimap a trapezoid?
    I have 3d mode running

That's how a 3D client has to work. If it was just square like in the 2D then you would be viewing all ships from a top-down view - go to base and mess around with the camera angle by holding down right-click and you will see what I mean.

  3. Inside the mini-map there is a very weak outline of a trapezoid for your 'personal space'. This was there prior to the 3-D introduction.
As for the mini-map itself, even on 3-D it shows the same sort of rectangle as it always has.

Not quite; the trapezoid id definitely new to the 3D client

The outline on the minimap indicates a players screen region compared to the overall map, in 2D is is a rectangle or square depending on a players resolution.

In the 2D client the camera is directly above the user's ship, so they can see the same distance both in front and behind. It is effectively a top-down view of the map, just the images such as NPC / Shipsare not show as flat but are angled instead:

The 3D is a trapezoid due to how the view must work for a 3D client and this is a new change because of it.

In the 3D the ships are acting as boats on a flat sea where they can move forwards / backwards and the camera angle is always a fixed position 'in the sky' behind the ship looking outwards.
You can see this when you zoom in and out of the 3D client - the position of the camera in the angle of "the sky" changes and so does the trapezoid to show that the view distance on the user's screen has changed.

    I see what you mean.

When I move the camera angle directly to the top, in the normal 2d config, the screen indicator on the minimap changes to a rectangle.
