How do ships speeds work out?

I am regularly being caught up to by Golis when I am in a Spearhead, yet by the figures a Spearhead is faster.

Spearhead + Prom with 12 X G3N-7900 = Speed 588
Goli + Prom with 15 X G3N-7900 = Speed 540

Is this speed difference negligible or should the Spearhead be able to outpace a Goli?

 

Your calculations are correct, sounds really strange. I use spearhead quite often and not a single time has goliath got back in range after I got out of range. And I have never caught a spearhead when I have been in a goliath.

Probably caused by lag, game shows goliath being further away than it actually is on the server and when game realizes that the ship is in a wrong place that ship will get a short speed boost and move to the correct place (which might be next to your own ship) faster than the maximum speed is. When ship reaches its "real" place on the screen it will return to its normal maximum speed.
This is annoying but I think it is better than ship disappearing and appearing in a nanosecond from wrong place to the right place, which you may have seen in other games during lag.

 

if you are holding down mouse button to fly then the closer it is to your ship the slower your speed will be. For best results click on a location on minimap to fly at max speed.

The issue Darkomaani. points out seems to have been around ever since the range change and is most noticeable when you start to shoot another ship. Suddenly they fly out of range as the server updates where they really are. very annoying.
