  1. Cruising through 3-6 used to be so nice. I could just cube in peace and harmony, chat with the relatively small group of East 2 users about things and go on my happy way. However, for the last few weeks I have not been able to indulge in basically any Dark Orbit playing. I haven't been able to cube, or hunt, or do gates, or seemingly even fart in space without a delay of about 3 minutes to catch up.

Now, I am aware that Dark Orbit on the whole has been experiencing DDoS attacks lately, and as a paying customer of BigPoint's services in the gaming omniverse, I am curious as to what is being done to help eliminate the problem -- or if this is even the problem I am experiencing. I have tried cleaning out my cache and using different browsers, to no avail. I am experiencing no bad game performance -- meaning my game is running at ~60 fps, and I can move freely. The only issue I face is the literal lag between me commencing actions like shooting or clicking something, and the action taking place. I am disheartened to see this issue continue over such a prolonged period, and I imagine the BigPoint programming staff is working relentlessly to fix the problem. However, at the same time I cannot justify spending any more of my money on a game that is so easily susceptible to these attacks, especially since the only time of day it is a major problem is at prime time, which is the only time that I am home during the week.

Please do not take this the wrong way; if this is projected as an angry tirade, I apologize. I love Dark Orbit and the friends I have made on my bucolic little server. I'm only dissatisfied that this issue continues to persist with no real update as to what is being done to solve it. The original forums post concerning this was published on October the 10th by wiley_wiggins, with an update coming out stating that compensation was coming on November the 19th, and we are now 9 days from Christmas without a solution being reached. What progress is being made towards this issue, if any? Is this how Dark Orbit is going to be from now on? To put it as simply as possible, what exactly is going on?

I thank anyone who takes the time to read and respond to this in advance. If anyone has any suggestions for me to try, please; I'd love to hear them.

    Hi there,

Although DDoS attacks may have a part to blame i do not believe that they are the cause of the lag issues that you are experiencing. DDoS attacks normally will cause a server outtage or something of that nature since they are attacks aimed at increasing the load on the servers such that they can no longer handle it. If this is the case then every player would be experiencing the same issue as you and there would have been more reports similar to yours. Unfortunately there is not a quick fix when it comes to DDoS attacks.

Can i ask that when you experience your issue is there any graphic lag that occurs (e.g. if you were to shoot something, can you still move freely or do you stutter?).

Do you have your flash settings adjusted to allow the game to us more local storage? When in-game, right click your client and click on 'settings'. Click on the 'folder' tab and you will be able to increase the storage allowed by the game.

Do you keep track of your in-game memory usage? If you click 'f' in-game, not only do you display your FPS but also your memory usage. It is found that many users start experiencing these sort of lag issues when their memory usage is high (600MB+ etc.). Refreshing your game every now and should stop your memory usage from going too high.

Unfortunately there is no quick fix for these issues therefore we can only provide suggestions that may help reduce the issue you are having.

I have recently started experiencing similar problems, after playing for some time the game will repeatedly freeze for a blip during which the mouse is unresponsive and when play does resume the mouse will usually be off the screen.
Seems to be when memory usage goes over 400M, however the problem goes away if I switch to full screen.

I can still move freely, nothing is impeded in terms of visuals. Just the action itself takes awhile; clicking things takes about 15-20 seconds for the red target circle to show up.

Now, this I did just turn up. It was set to 100 KB, which sounded extremely small, so maybe that was my issue? I dunno, I will try it for a day or two and see if it helps.

Yes Sir/Ma'am, I do. I actually have the hot key for the FPS and memory counters on my H key, and I always have it on precisely to see when Grooveshark takes me over an acceptable total lol.

I will try the local storage setting change for a few days, let's say until the 27th, and if I feel that the problem is solved then I will ask to close the thread. Thanks for the suggestions, ~Ddraig :)

  6. My laptop seems to handle memory a little bit better, once I do have memory related issues it's usually

    1. around 1000 MBs
    2. causes general game lag, including a dip in FPS and no movement at all

and yea, my mouse will phase out from time to time too lol it's a struggle man. I've had close calls with cubes and hunters because of a sticky mouse.
