Should hunting be allowed in 5-3?

  1. Years ago there was honor among the players of this game. Sure, there were a few bad apples, but most of the players had a code of ethics. For example, take map 5-3. In my eyes that map is a NAP zone. Most players get it and abide by it. Some, however, treat it like their own private hunting ground, showing up in groups and killing those individuals who are just trying to collect Palladium. It sucks the fun out of the game when this happens. When I'm in 5-3 I don't fire on anyone. In fact, when the NPCs attack ANYONE I'm more than willing to help them. Not to mention, no one goes to 5-3 in a group to collect rocks. So, it ends up being a 2 or 3 vs 1 fight with someone who has their weapons set for killing NPCs and not other players. I know you're probably thinking "suck it up" or "go whine somewhere else", but I believe this can be a serious problem within the game. Oh, and by the way, I'm a 20 year retired combat Marine who knows something about rules of engagement (ROE).

We live in an era where bullies aren't to be tolerated, nor should they be. And to say "it's just a part of the game" feeds into the problem. Getting killed in an openly PVP map is understandable and to be expected, especially if one is trying to box or loiter on the map. But what of the UFE Goliath -- or Goliaths -- who wait at the portal and fires on unsuspecting lowbies en route from x4 to x5? They just get popped. Years ago the players guarded portals from this by having their own UFE ships patrolling their own gates, looking for wolf packs and others who planned to prey on the weaker ships. That doesn't happen anymore. Its every man for himself these days.

Is there a "cure" for this behavior? It's doubtful. We live in a time where there is a shrinking respect toward others. But I look at it like this --
There's a room at the end of the hall. It's the fastest way to progress, maybe the only way. But you keep getting pushed away from the door. How can you ever progress unless you get through?!

Is there a technical solution? Possibly. A few key strokes on the programmers end and 5-3 can become a forced neutral zone, or eliminate groups within the maps, or deduct honor from offenders, or even blacklist those players from that map. There are lots of possible solutions. Will that ever happen? Doubtful. Trash talking bullies already fill the chat rooms with their adolescent taunting. BP does nothing. "It's all just a part of the game." I disagree. Clan leaders have a responsibility to remind their clansmen of the rules -- especially the unwritten ones. If every time you opened your front door you got hit in the face eventually you'd stop trying to go outside.

So again, today I was reminded why I left this game years ago. Single players who just want to mind their own business and help others get punished, while those who prey on less equipped ships prosper. Where I come from that's just wrong.

  2. Well, it is part of the game considering there are quests that include killing enemy players in 5-x maps. 5-x maps, honestly, aren't different from the rest of the Darkorbit NPC maps besides not being able to go back into the previous 5-x maps, and a different type of ore. And so, it should be treated like a regular NPC map-a map where you will be inevitably hunted by enemy players.

Regarding about the unwritten rules from years ago, I can say that those rules -at least in my server- have expired long ago, and for them to be followed once more is asking too much, putting the consideration in the fact that the community has drastically changed.

I do support implementing a negative honor mechanic after killing another player in the 5-x maps, but then again, it's just a regular NPC map, and everyone hunts in the NPC maps because that's part of the game.

With what you said here, you reminded me of the old good days, be damned :(

I will have to say that I really miss that days. I miss the days when a Vengeance hitting 16k damage with x3 was a "honorable" enemy. :) What I have seen so far, the in-game achievement "One Man Army" suits the best to describe the current situation. No one is willing to help, everyone mind their own job. For example, I am on Global Europe 5, and have never ever seen in my life so unfriendly clans, not willing to help anyone. That's insane, really. I mean, hello people, it's a damn game, isn't it ?! o_O No one should take it too seriously. Unfortunately, most players take this game for too serious, which leads to the effect "One Man Army".

Personally, I am not sure if there is a cure to this, except teleportation back to the good days when the team spirit was on the highest level. :) I will always miss that days. I don't say that I don't like the game now, it is easier to do much things now that it was before, but if you ask me to choose, I will still choose the old days.

Stay good man, if you can somehow enjoy the game, than play it. Otherwise, don't ruin your old experience and that great moments we all had. :)

    Merry Christmas!

PS. Voted for NO on the poll above. I have always thought that 5-3 should be "Demilitarized zone", although UFEs will jump on what I have said right now, and mostly likely, they will tell you they need to kill someone (as usual) :)

  4. I think the reason the pally field was introduced was to bring back the epic battles we once had to gain control of the bmaps.

If 5.3 was DZ then there would be no one to prune the botters that would stay there all day.

So, botters. Why do we care about botters and talk about them? Aren't they supposed to get banned, and not be a purpose for something else to not happen?

  7. [KeBaB*]®

    [KeBaB*]® User

Because botters are such a big problem and have been for about 4 years. People who use programs get banned, soon enough a new bunch of botters appear with new programs that are yet to be traced by Bigpoint.

  8. Well, I have to agree with the OP, WOMP–¦–RAT.
Some latitude should be given to the new players of the game. If you only constantly get killed eventually you go find a happier game to play.
Yes I remember the days of old, where honor was a good and proud thing to have. Many a player would follow the examples shown by the honorable players.

Small example: You're an EIC player on an MMO map, you come in contact with a VRU player, you didn't start firing away at each other you either passed each other by or joined in the hunt against MMO. Current days it doesn't matter what map your in if it's red "fire".
Now things seem even worse, Multi-Company Clans. This only results in the ending of once long lasting Alliances and Non Aggression Pacts. It brings war to those who have played as friends for many years, resulting in the Soloist players.

In my clan, there are no multi-company members and never will be. We believe in honor still and the "need" to help the new comers. Though it be small it is still our effort to bring up the game membership. We even go help enemy new comers just to show there are still honorable players within the game.
I believe the introduction of the "Clan Battle Stations" brought forth the Multi-Company Clans.

Yes, the days of old are gone but I truly feel if enough of us just stay loyal to the honorable way things will change.

Be safe and enjoy the game :D

lol dont bother. as newbie you cant even go out of 2-2 without being dead 24/7. might as well make it pay to play since it is that way anyway

Again, do you realize so said NO to DMZ zone in 5-3 just because of botters? That means you put them in first plan, and you do care about them.

  11. The Pirate maps were introduced as B-Maps and as such were PvP maps, this changed (over time by the community) to be open maps to kill pirates (but there are still those who abide by BATTLE MAPS) and you will not change that. Yes I remember the days of OLD where a person called out an enemy in a map and had 15 people respond to track and kill them, long since gone from the game, the Advanced Jump Chip saw to this death, we no longer were able to protect our maps from infiltration as the enemy no longer needs to jump through a Portal. As stated Botters are using 5-3 to FARM Galaxy Gates and are allowed to do so (do not believe the BOT SYSTEM is even looking at these players) but know several who are sitting in the map allowing their PET to collect while they are sitting along the outside of mist (CLOAKED) or in the mist not even at the keyboard, I get upset I get up to relieve myself and I get logged out for inactivity.

IF D O wants to survive they are going to have to return to the attitudes of OLD or suffer a SLOW PAINFUL DEATH as the WALLETS dry up, the Veterans get bored and leave the game and they are left with a bunch of gangland hoodlums that are running through the maps looking for a newb to kill.

Sorry of topic to the OP, but this post. Priceless. I really mean this, the reality told in couple of sentences. :)

  13. Don't know if you meant your reply or my comment but MOST of my reply was on target with the Pirate Maps and PvP. I did, however, place my opinion at the end of the post about if D O does not remember its beginnings it will lose what it has strived to become.

I will have to say on both, but mostly on the beginnings you have talked about. Damn, when someone talks about that it reminds me of the old good days, I still can't forget those moments. Full maps, on ports 50 players waiting on the weekends so enemies can't cross the maps. :) Good times man, good times. I hope those times will come again in this game.

  15. It is the only way D O will survive the coming onslaught of NEW and IMPROVED Space Games that are out and FREE to PLAY. Too many good players have jumped ship to those other games already and even more jumping daily, REVIEW what worked in the past or DIE a slow death (well not too slow you keep driving the nails in the coffin) by driving the community away.

  16. Correct. The last few events have helped tidy things up a little but its a snowblower in a snowstorm, it's not quite enough. Honor is a lacking thing in this game, as some might say it's just a game why do we need honor in something unrealistic, fake? Well, it contributes to more fun and balanced gameplay for everybody. The idea of honor in a game where you control little ships in space may seem stupid, but it's very much what kept this game alive. Full throttle is right on the account of a lack of honor, in fact what he said about fellow invading companies just happened to me where i was invading 3-6 as an eic, 5 mmo came up, didn't shoot so I figured that's cool, guess someone still remembers but nope not a moment later they all shot me. They all died too but noobs won't have that kind of advantage. As for the 5-3 thing I say yeah because you know what? Making 5-3 neutral will only invite more bots, but they will also become careless in their false safety. NOT TO MENTION the pirates still exist, and DO altering animations on ore and boxes not allowing them to be collected as easily is quite a roadblock for bots. I say let em have it. It's better we expose them and at the same time allow noobs who don't bot to grow. That's what we need in this game. The good kind of growth, not the cancerous one that is named bots

Huh? Yes I do care about botters they are ruining the game, and they will easily sit in 5.3 to bot for unlimited amounts of time to collect paladium and/or farm bray.

Obviously, the game is not what it used to be. Game entry is ridiculously difficult and you don't get UFE's helping new players (usually) because it takes years to build a ship without paying now (unlike in the old days where 80% of the clans would take in any manor of ships to build them up).
This is not the fault of UFE players shooting everyone in sight; the fact that we can is just because you don't get company defenders anymore and it makes it easy for us to poach easy kills (we usually do this for rank points btw, and if not simply because we are bored and there are no other fights going on - RE: Dead Servers). DZ'ing maps won't do anything to rebuild the server. Maybe it will ensure that the current flow of newbies will build there ships, but there is such a lack of new players, the current load of weaker ships who hate UFEs for killing them will become that UFE that weaker ships hate - trust me, we all started somewhere and we all had a group of UFE's that we hated because of them poaching us constantly).

  18. Well when my friends started they saw the possibility of getting their ship FE (the best at the time) and then had to work to get the BIO to be TRULY FE. Now you have to work even harder to get your ship UFE before thinking about the BIO. So where you can not get the PROTECTION or help they used to get to do quests and the maps are overrun with enemy attackers it is hard to enjoy a game full of ships too strong to get any defense from being killed and being popped so often we are repairing our ship more than finishing our quests we seem to decide to quit the game and find something else to do more enjoyable. Maybe if the UFE decided to stay in their maps half of the time they are playing to help the newbs in the lowers maybe there might be more players in the game. But then D O would have to make improvements that did not make the game unenjoyable either.

  20. Grammar aside, I could not have said it better myself. AND yes we all KNOW we are just RENTING these accounts and is WHY D O is so strict about those who create them then SELL them to recoup some of the expenses they put out to build them to where they are. It would be funny, though, if a lawsuit was brought about for all the thefts that D O has done in the past few years and got a refund to all persons who INVESTED in the game.
