  1. Hello everyone,

    I have made what i believe is the single most important video i have ever made. The topic is;

    Ship kill rankpoint rewards versus. Galaxy Gate rankpoint rewards!

    Now i know that many will watch the first 5 minutes of the video and come back here and comment that they worked their butt of to get all their rankpoints. I understand that! But please watch the entire video before you comment as there will be information in the end that explains further on what solution i have for the game going forward.



    I hope that you will watch the entire video and come with constructive critisism or ideas. I have spent quite some time setting this video up so i hope you will respect that and take the 20 minutes it takes to watch it and also reply in respectfull manner.

    Remember guys and gals, we want a game that is worth playing in the future too, and a good rank means nothing if there is nobody to see it!

    Ok beyond the usual or the expected questions to be asked, I just need to ask "what good is rank???"
    I have asked this question without a decent answer for years.
    From what I noticed rank doesn't improve the performance of your ship, it doesn't improve the accuracy or performance of your lasers or rocket launchers or generators. In another post I compared rank to a large or larger feather in a virtual hat.

    Enemy kills as a tool to improve this needless rank system of yours seems like an alright idea if and only if it is gained by defending your company maps or answering challenges by rival company players in 1v1 combat like a duel.
    The notion of hunting equally powerful or even weaker players that are farming should be punishable by rank and honor loss as well as the type of pilot entering an enemy map to hunt but ends up fleeing from their target instead of continuing the fight they started to a less than favorable end.

    Should there be a different rank system concerning enemy ship kills to GG completion? Yes I believe so but make the ship kills regulated by rules of engagement such as:
    1) Defending lower maps from enemy.
    2) Finishing the fight to it's end without porting out.
    3) Not cloaking in enemy maps.
    4) Not being in an outfit in enemy maps or during duels.
    5) equal number of combatants "1v1, 2v2, ect.."


    I believe the proper place for hunting should be nowhere!!!
    I consider the concept of hunting less than prepared players as cowardly and honorless.
    My experience with hunters has been disappointing considering the notion of an enemy that is willing to flee from me if their attack doesn't destroy me outright or after being destroyed before they can reach port they return with assistance.
    Words fail me when I try to voice the level of contempt I have for that type of player.

    Rank has no function as such but it is something players fight to get... well today they dont fight for ranks as it is impossible to get a good rank anymore in this game but back 7-8 years ago people would fight for the ranks because it would display how good and active you were.

    The problem with hunters you describe is seperate from this one i believe. Both should be adressed but we cant exclude one due to the other :)

    This a PvP game, as such you will be shot down by varying levels of players. Honor has nothing to do with anything, personal or game honor. In the rank page, it does not show the level or equipment of the person you kill, only that you killed them. You are nothing but a number on a page.

    Are you trying to say that as if there is nothing wrong with it or that it is good that people get rewarded for shooting every weak player they see who can't fight back? Overall I mostly agree with that actual pvp should give you better rank points(something to show for it/work towards) but killing every weak player you see shouldn't be encouraged.


    Though to be honest I don't know how high the chances of such a drastic change as changing how to get rank, like making so honor is useless. I know you repeatedly said in the video with a kinda "who cares about it" tone people have spent silly amounts of money to go after rank, I don't think drastically changing that is likely any time soon but could at least make it so get more rank points from ship kills and like mentioned in your video why not have days where ship kills give double or so rank points?

    Though if can't change how current rank works, nothing is stopping BP from making a separate kind of "ranks" that can also see in-game that get by doing PvP and like you said resets every 3 months or so?(maybe could put a different ranks above the ship like the crown from UBA) I don't think it neccesarily has to be the current rank system that need to change for it, if it were to change like said can't see it changing any time soon.

    The point you make with your video is fair, but about DarkOrbit in general things shouldve changed a long time ago but they didnt.
    The game is so outdated and the updates and new things they added don't add anything for new players or new aspects to the game.
    A new ranking system, maybe a game client instead of a browser game only? something ive wanted since 2009 is being able to jump from server to server. better interfaces, updated auction updated shop, better way to play the game f2p without using a bot or playing a lot.
    They added a sick 3d version but honestly do people use it who play a lot? the things i listed above are just a few of the things that could be changed or tweeked.
    But i doubt it will ever happen.

    Hey I don't mind that it is a PvP game, believe that!!!
    I'm saying that using cloaks, emp's, outfitting to hunt and or hunting enemy players in the lower maps and fleeing battle when hunting in enemy maps should be honor and rank damage or even loss offenses.

    All things considered, this is not just a PvP game.
    Offering the option to not PvP until the pilot is ready to do so should be a feature since varying levels of skill and level players are all caught in the mosh with this game.
    I say offer a tab to all players to activate when they believe they are ready to fight and make it possible to turn off when the player wants down time from battle to prepare.
    This would allow all players to prepare for events that are PvP in origin and keep bullying by the PvP only crowd that kill the game for too many players from being the only ones to gain from events.

    I like your ideas. My two cents. Instead of resetting rank point every 3 months or whatever. The points could be based upon a rolling total over the last 6 months or so. This way you would need to be active to keep your rank. Also gates should have diminishing returns over a time period, say a month and then reset. Something needs to be done

    points you get for killing the ship type multiplier of your ship type

    example: you are a surgeon and you kill a diminsher you get (your ship type multiplier x the ship type you killed)[ 2x5=10 erb/arb points]
    in this system the only way to rank up is by killing enemy players not gates not aliens just enemy players
    this system gives an incentive in rank points to encourage the use of different ship types

    darkorbit should keep the current ranking system intact and refer to it as the HONORARY SYSTEM example: honorary general, honorary colonel etc and the new system ERB/ARB darkorbit should refer to it as the ACTIVE or ACTING SYSTEM
    example active or acting general, active or acting colonel etc
    the old/current system is excellent for those who like pve and the new system will be excellent for those who like pvp everyone wins

    the ERB rank will reset every three months as ROYAL JAMES 1 suggested why every three months? because you are a pilot in a company and what do companies do every 3 months? quarterly reports. ;) darkorbit should reward those who get high ranks for keeping the maps alive this gives an incentive aside from the rank logo for players to compete

    every month there should be an event called [MARCHING ORDERS that gives you twice the amount of ERB point you get during the event]
    event description: attention all pilots we have just gotten an executive order from the board of the directors to escalate our attacks on the enemy companies to honor your commitment to our cause you will receive twice the amount of erb points you get during this period go out there and show then[the enemy companies] who runs things around here
    event begins Friday 12am and ends Monday 12am pve has double gg day event and pvp have marching order event

    the numbers look weird cuz idk how to put then in a chart
    also the values there are just to serve as an example darkorbit should make their chart by taking into consideration the difficulty of killing each ship and give the values accordingly

    A lot of the points mentioned in the video are invalid.

    1: Inactive players do not keep there rank, once they become active again they have regain rank by entering the maps and on the following days rank calculation they will jump in rank but will not receive there old rank as would have been over taken by active players. You gave the impression that inactive players keep there rank.

    2: GG's have been part of DO since the first year of it going live with the Alpha,Beta and Gamma gate. Gate farming as always been part of the game mainly for collecting X-4 ammo by the FE players of the original game.

    3: The rank point system as been updated over the life span of the game so your comment that in 10 years the rank system as not been changed is incorrect.

    4: Your comment about playing GG's is not how the game is supposed to be played is also incorrect as the original concept was 3 company's battling over resources This includes PvP, PvE, collecting, missions and GG's.

    Rank as always been cosmetic and about bragging rights and Ego, A rank reset every 3 months would have a negative effect on the game and its economy, increasing rank points for ship kill's by to much would not help new players as noob bashing would increase and new players would leave, leaving even more empty maps. The mathematics that you demonstrated are from a singular point of view and only showed a comparison of killing Goli's and GG's, a broader example that includes other ships and PvE examples of BK's BBK's and cubes would have been a more balanced view.

    Although I think there should be some adjustment to the ranking system and it should be for the game as a total and not just a singular adjustment for ship kills but also for missions and PvE , also less honor and EP awarded to players in a MCC to balance the fact that they have no company loyalty and should be reflected in there ranking.

    What if you favor the smaller ships, would you get more points killing a goli if you're in a vengi or DefCom ship?

    a defcom has a x10 multiplier and a goli gives 4 points so if the defcom kills the goli it will get 40 ERB points
    and a goli has a x4 multiplier so if it kills a defcom it will only get 4 ERB points
    in the table above the first number is the amount of erb points killing that ship gives you and the second number is that ship's multiplier
    also in order for a ship to give you points it must be participating in the ERB this will allow for small ships to opt out of being drag into a conflict in which they might get farm for points by unethical players and also it help discourage strong ships from killing smaller ship as they would not get any ERB points from killing then if they are not participating
     

  16. Any company that resets employee values and requires a new 3 month period will ultimately fail.
    Games that continually reset and cause those to redo what they had already done, will fail.
     
  17. I would suggest having 3 split ranking systems on the game:
    • PvE Rankings (aliens killed, galaxy gates completion count and their type)
    • PvP Rankings (players killed, clan bases destroyed and types of ships killed by count, own company killed and newbie kills will be calculated here too as their PvP rank points)
    • Total or Overall scoring from both the PvE and PvP rank points they have earned (honor, experience and deaths should be calculated here too as the Overall Rank points addition to the PvP and PvE rank points)
    in this way, players who have spammed gates would consider also be dwelling into the maps to have fights with their same leveled opponents, but noob bashing will not occur, as to prevent that, D.O should make another policy or rule on gaining honor points and exp points from killing noobs.

    High ranked players will still earned their hard worked title, but surely from the gates they have done they will still be high ranked on PvE ranking and from Overall scoring, but on PvP it depends on how active they were on having fights or clan base defenses and attacks.
    1. killing players that is lower than 5 levels than you shouldn't be rewarded with honor, but with negative uridium and experience each time they kill players 5 levels below them (player level should be shown near their rank and shown as a BLUE text so they will know which to kill and which to be left alone, other types of rules in the game like who shot their own company mate will receive negative honor and can become an outlaw but with other rival companies, if the player is 5 levels below you, then it will still be your loss
    2. Having a player kill someone that is 5 levels above them would consider an honorary reward, the player will receive a good amount of uridium, honor and experience depending on what level they were.
    3. an Increase of experience reward from aliens and on galaxy gates will surely make players level up, preventing them from stalling their level progress, and the majority of the game are level 16 or 17 and above, should collection of bonus boxes are abused on battlemaps and even on x-2, x-3, x-4 maps, collection of bonus boxes should be implemented only to levels above 12 from those designated maps and also including battle maps, levels below 7 that can still collect bonus boxes from x-1 maps should cut the reward value to 75% to prevent abuse and force players to earn level until they get to atleast level 12, or limit the bonus box count of collection to still prevent abuse from botters.

    companies do quarterly reports to report their performance not to reset the values of the companies nor their goals nor their product portfolio I only mentioned it due to their periodic nature.
    there are games that make you do a placement match to determine your rank and have a season ranking system example overwatch
    I don't expect darkorbit to have an exact system to the one other games have because darkorbit is in my view a unique game
    however I posted in this thread because i wanted the darkorbit team to consider revamping their ranking system
    i don't think that darkorbit will do anything about the ranking this year because they have their plate full with the new lazers new ships and many hiden goodies but next year they will start doing something about the rank system.
    i personally think it might look something like silent walker posted but who knows what new development might come by then. i guess we just have to wait and see.
