[UI] name change

Hello, I would like to address an issue with the name change as recently I have become a victim of my own joviality with choosing a name that others may find offensive, having been advised by a cm to not use it in chat but to instead use a noob acc to chat if needed I have found that this is not an option due to everytime I have logged into my noob acc to chat I have returned to my main to find it under an hours chat ban. Many like myself make a small mistake with name changes and result in having to wait for 48 hours to change name. My suggestion to combat this would be an option to change name before the 48 hours cool down period by either removing it or offering a uridium cost to alter the name before the 48 hours are up, also to remove the chance of exploitation of name changing you could put a limit to one uridium name change in the 48 hours period or to have it much like the way uridium price doubles each time you use the reset pilot bio. please let me know what you think.

I like this idea. A lot of players get crazy at times and push the envelope not realizing the implications. The ability to pay for a change in the first day would solve a lot of issues. Player renames to *&%$#@ and is told its offensive, pays uri to change it back or to something else. No chat ban...

 

A better method would be to have D O approve the name before the change is completed. I see several names on ships that are very offensive and should not have even been allowed to be submitted as an usable name. The same filter used to bleep words on the forums could be applied to the name change application and could save the unsuspecting player from getting their ship suspended for days at a time for a mistake they thought was funny but was actually against some outdated morality code. They already filter to see if you are duplicating a name so it should not be hard to verify the name would not be offensive or bannable.

 

Big problem would be the complexity of the filter. A lot of players already know they are pushing it with the names so they use various spellings and fonts to try to get around it, and then complain when is still caught. DO loves banning the cute tries...

 

Fine then they KNOW it is going to get them banned and they deserve it the line was for the MISTAKEN name that they got in trouble for. SO to deliberately TRY to push the WINDOW is not the same as the person who unwittingly made the mistake.

 

This is true. Some players will just try to be cute because they think it is fun to have some "wrong" name in the game. Although I will give it to you that some will mis-type a name and get banned. I do like your idea about name changes being ok'ed by DO. It would suck and cause some unlikely player hours of frustration at clicking yes or no. But it is a good idea. Maybe some of these blank names would disappear.

After reading below, I see a meaning was mis-understood. I meant "blank" as in just lines or spaces, not as a curse word.

 

I am more concerned about the names that can not be typed in chat as you will be banned just for trying to talk to them. Yes I know by using special characters (not recognized by software programs) you can get some real weird names generated but these are not telling you to go "blank" yourself either. This BLATANT abuse of the rules is what I am more interested in removing from the name game, but I prefer to think they are just not aware of what they are doing and need a reminder before being suspended or banned. I know one player who had his account suspended because he forgot to change the name upon the 48 hour mark because he pushed the window (not vulgar just not nice either) and when he did log in again found his in-game experience was delayed.

I personally wish they had a method of disallowing variations of the same name on a server. This is because people remember the phonics of a name not the actual name and they type according to the typing they are doing instead of pasting the correct name into chat. My friend has special characters in his name (has had for 4 years) and has recently been told someone has video of his name botting, but I know their are AT LEAST 2 variants of his name flying on USA West (1 is all caps the other is without the special characters) and I have actually copied his name and added a number to it, but it is distinguishable as a second player no matter if typed or copied. And my friend does not fly in the B-Maps for very long as he thinks boxing is boring and not profitable for the normal player anymore, he has his PET do the boxing while he kills NPC's for quests.

It might even get rid of people like Big_Country using the same name in 2 different companies and changing accounts to hunt for victims just added an extra underscore (flies VRU and MMO using MMO to help push his VRU account up the ranks), of course this is LEGAL as the 2 accounts are not on at the same time but it is a simple login/logout process and he has sitting ducks to kill when he wants to.

 

Yes I agree with this statement as I am tired of being called a cheater when I am not doing what I am being accused of. But since I am almost inactive (just doing events and skylab transfers) am not dealing with the accusations anymore. But yes to have players using AlienHunter and ALIENHUNTER to copy my name does stink. I don't mind HMHU adding the 2 to my name because as he says people can distinguish a second where they can not distinguish special characters.
