So, im on my lunch (1pm UK time like most of the country therefore relates to GB1) and the during SK's on Alpha Gate, the server restarts...!!

Can I make a suggestion to NOT restart the server during the daytime of the country involved, maybe do it at like 4am...? I understand people may play at that time too but it really can't be the quietest of times at 1pm?

Yup, i was like 70 of 80 sk done, luckily i was doin alpha first and not a beta or gamma cos i've started at wave 21 all over again

And I guess the answer is so their staff in Germany can restart it at just gone 2pm instead of having to wake up to do maintenance like pretty much most other IT departments have to!

Dark Orbit usually restarts the server very late at night when no one is playing, this way it doesn't screw anyone up as much. However, if they found a major bug or glitch that need to be fixed immediately, they would have restarted it during the day to avoid anyone playing later on disruption due to the glitch/ bug.

As Cooljak96 already said, any major bug fixes will warrant a server restart during the day, same goes for when the server is being updated with new stuff.

In this particular case it was probably to sort the chat issues.

Chat issues were caused by the server restart, then they got fixed later on

Okapi32, if ur posting about issues make sure ur online at the time! There was no warning, other than the usual 120 second count down, and as Sparta correctly said, it was the server restart that broke chat anyways!!

These are all the reasons I spent the few hundred quid I was planning to treat myself with uri for xmas elsewhere, and have deleted my card details to ensure I'm not tempted again. This is supposed to be a "community" game (it was described as that on its launch 7 years ago but is now more of a dictatorship...

    I was online ...
There isn't always a warning, no need to have a go at me for it, I was just explaining why day time restart happen, just as Cooljak did. No need to be angry at me for DO doing a day time reset to sort issues or implement updates.

You were online for the restart to fix chat or the original 1:10pm restart? I read it as you only seen the second restart for the reason "to fix chat", which they broke with their unannounced restart

I didn't write down the time that the restart happened sorry, I was online this afternoon when a restart happened and had been told via ts that there were issues with chat.

I then in my post said multiple other reasons as to why a restart happened. Restarts during the day are nothing new, they happen at least once a week, again no need to be angry at me for explaining why they sometimes happen in the day.

Sorry if I was incorrect for the exact issue the restart was meant to deal with, I'll be sure to phone to developers and ask for a full patch write up next time :)

Thank you all for your input into this issue.

As you are all aware the general server reset is done in the evening when few players are enjoying the game. However the development team is working hard to resolve as many in game issues and offer you a better gaming environment. So on occasions, there is a game reset as to resolve the latest fixes.

This is not done to upset anyone's game, merely to make it better. However I would think that one extra reset now and again would be acceptable when 10-15 things are being resolved.

But as the old saying goes: You can please some of the people some of time... but you cant please all of the people all of the time.

I will suggest that you recommend something different be done. I will remind them that they could always go back to the 1 X a week 10 hour maintenance that was done in 2007.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.
    Have a lovely day!

A 5 minute in game announcement warning would fix the issue of players in gate. ;)
Maybe that could be suggested to the dev team.

Just a bit more of a warning would be fine (the 5 minute warning didn't appear for me this time, just the 120 second timer). And TBH, when the developers make places where you can't just exit (like a hades gate) then giving 5 minutes warning is far from enough... maybe you should suggest they give maybe 2 hours with a popup every 5 minutes until the 120 second timer? So then I could have finished my gate wave and waiting til after the restart....

And if the development team feel they have so many bugs in their coding as to need 10 hours per week then so be it, but my recommendation is as above, 5 minutes is NOT enough for a game they have developed which can lock you in places until you've killed everything which could take an hour....

And feel free to close (after the above comments have been passed on to whoever made the decision to restart the server without a decent warning)

Updates should lock Galaxy Gates 2 hours before an update OR there be a Forum message or in game message.
Other games that I play have it as a message on the Start Up screen, seeing as everyone logs into the game via that way, anyone logging in 20 minutes before a re-start would also know.

A while ago, I was in Zeta when suddenly a 120 seconds countdown started at around 4 PM server time. The reset came on second "mini wave" of the last wave and by that time I killed 3 out of 10 Scorchers. When I saw the countdown I thought one life is gone and was just flying around.
But then had an idea, and started going in circles at the upper left part of the map. When the counter was at about 45 seconds, I clicked lower right corner on a minimap and as soon as my ship stopped, I was disconnected.
Then I started with frantic clicks on START and closing the gamepage until I managed to reconnect. When the game page opened I saw a standard wave countdown, but it looked as I am in the mid of it (the wave countdown).
After that, the aliens appeared more or less at the place when I last saw them before I got disconnected. And what's even more important, there was a Devourer with 7 Scorchers, so the wave didn't start from the beginning.

This shows that on server restart, when GGs are in question, the GG state can be saved and the player does not have to re-establish connection ASAP to avoid losing a life. Instead, as soon as the connection is established, the game continues in a gate with the appropriate wave countdown just like the one after a normal jump to the gate. It would certainly solve lots of problems with lost gates, gate resets and other complaints caused by server restarts.

Just sharing my experience with server restart while doing a gate...

  17. Hello, I am in N.Y. USA and resets usually occur at approx. 11:30 PM ., my time. However I always seem to get plenty of warning ,as usual, of upcoming reset. However there are many other issues with the game back page and space map which need to be resolved before the game can be considered playable again.I have faith that DO staff will EVENTUALLY solve these problems but I am getting a bit impatient. I have just finished sk wave of gamma and I want to go back and finish with out worrying about losing a life due to technical problems.
