    Question:
    Why is it that a signature requires some 3rd party account to be made up to accept an upload, then linked to the DO site, yet an avatar did not need this?

    Simple answer is to save memory space on the forum server as only the link is saved in your profile and a link takes less memory as an image file. Avatars are very small in file size and need less memory so can be uploaded direct from your PC with out hogging to much memory space.
