  1. I used to play on gb1 but recently started playing again but on gb2. but ive noticed th ram usage drop from 1gb to 400mb. how can i dedicate more ram to darkorbit to allow me to acheive higher fps when there are lots of players around. i have no idea what process it is in task manager so i dont know what to prioritise

    Unfortunately we here in forums are not computer tech specialists, we can merely give you the basic work arounds and information related to dark orbit gaming. As far a computer set up is concerned, that is something that is out of our scope of expertise.

    I would suggest maybe talking with members in your server community and see if one of them could possibly assist you.

    I am sorry that I could not help to resolve your issue.
    Please have a nice day

  3. you can prioritise the web browser you are playing in, but as far as ram allocations that happens automatically, to my knowledge

    The game will take as much memory as it needs, the lower the memory usage the better. GB2 is considered one of the smallest servers, so one reason you will be using less is because there will be fewer player ships for your to load in over time etc.

    When did you stop playing GB1 and start playing GB2? It could be a coincidence that you made the switch when the refactoring was put in place, this made the game much better optimized so less memory usage.

  5. it was a long time ago, but i want to manually allocate more ram to darkorbit specifically, as i dont want to drop frames when there is a lot to load

  6. You can not allocate RAM to a program, nor modify how much is being used or how much can be used. The software itself (Adobe Flash Player) will work alongside your browser and operating system to manage its RAM usage.

    That said, Windows is very manageable when it comes to RAM.

    Google Chrome comes with command line switches and flags which can be turned on/off/changed and/or switched on to facilitate certain requirements.

    Firefox comes with thousands of changeable options via its background hidden settings list.

    As Okapi has stated, the game took a huge change when it came to memory and loaded in data from the game. So expect some differences server to server depending on how crowded it could be.

    A notable RAM drop I have seen is Pepper Flash (the flash plugin intergrated into Google Chrome), it uses next to no RAM at all when DarkOrbit is in use, but Adobe Flash Player uses more. The fact Adobe uses more is not a bad thing, it just shows it manages RAM alot better than Pepper Flash.

    Also note, when updating google chrome (and if a Pepper Flash update is included in the update), Pepper Flash will become enabled again automatically when the update is complete (unless you have set a command line switch to completely remove it), and Pepper will be made the default Flash Plugin until you change it.

    Also, a RAM problem which I have noticed is the use of the Advanced Jump CPU, where the RAM usage will sky rocket each time you use that CPU to jump to another map, I am not sure the admins are aware of the problem.

    (Bare in mind all changes are made at the users own risk, myself, Google, or Mozilla will not be held responsible for a broken browser.)

  8. so what you are saying is that i cant stop the frame drops when there are a lot of players around?

  9. The lag when you have a lot of players around doesn't come because of the RAM low/high usage. Yes, RAM is important too but the most important thing is having GPU. Basically, if you are playing on lap top with integrated GPU (meaning, no GPU at all) you will almost always have the lag when you are in a bunch of people area. On the other hand, if you have PC with good GPU (meaning, more processor power) you won't have the lag at all, like most of the videos you can watch on YouTube for this game.

    Thus said, don't mind the lag. If you know you will be in bunch of people, lower the settings for the ship and explosions, that helps a lot. :) I do that when I play from my lap top, and want to mess with a lot of people :D

    PS. Yes, I know it may be strange the look of the ship when settings are lowered, but you will get used to it quickly, trust me. :)

  11. I have a semi-decent gpu, so i still dont understand why im getting the lag. i get 100+ frames on most other games running on highest settings... its such a pain

  12. Kai, have you looked at your main CPU usage as you go in to these maps that are congested?
    if you are hitting 100% cpu usage then that's your issue maybe.

  13. Wow, I don't know what else to say else. o_O Thought you may not have GPU and that may cause this lag. But now, not sure really.

    Yeah, can you give us info if the CPU usage gets this high?

  14. sorry didnt have a chance to get on a couple days, I have an i5 which i have never seen go above 25% on Darkorbit

  15. I can assure everyone, the GPU standard for running DarkOrbit is not a huge contribution to bad FPS.

    I am currently running a Q6600 2.4ghz (OC'd to 2.8ghz) with 4GB RAM and... wait for it... onboard/integrated GPU.

    This causes me to have a really really smooth game unless of course, 40 things are going mental on my screen.

    Please also remember, flash player games are most commonly capped at a range of 60 - 62 FPS, anyone getting slightly more than this are just basically lucky.

    Many settings or setups of PC systems can make a difference to Flash Player based games, as flash player handles everything alot different compared to PC games such as CoD and BF. Blockbuster games have the added components of DirectX, which handles many Graphical and CPU based parts of a game to look how it does, and the game utilizes the peripherals of your system.

    With flash player, alot of tweaks and settings based around you system BIOS can improve it ALOT.

    For example:

    My RAM timings were set to auto during my overclocking of my CPU, which, in line, caused DarkOrbit's FPS to drop and fluctuate alot. On changing my RAM timings to be tighter and more in sync with my CPU, DarkOrbit's FPS base lined to a healthy 61 when nothing is going on, and drops to maybe 30 - 40 FPS during busy periods (Galaxy Gates and PVP).

    So to all these people who get top notch CPU's and GPU's and find DarkOrbit is still horrible when it comes to FPS, you will find stock settings which are set when the system is shipped to you or you collect or build it your self, may not be substantial when it comes to some applications within your operating system.

    In some cases (which can be rare, or very common), just smacking together a PC build and turning it on, and expecting perfectly smooth gameplay from the word go, you may find this isnt true, as you havent dived into the core settings or tweaks which are vital to smooth and reliable PC performance.

    Think of Flash Player as the MiddleMan:

    1 - DarkOrbit produces the elements of the game;
    2 - Flash Player handles those elements and code of how a part of the game works;
    3 - Flash Player passes this information onto your system;
    4 - Your system works out what to do with it, how fast it does this, depends on your system;

    Blockbuster games dont have a middleman, they run straight at your system and scream "PROCESS THIS!", and your system jumps to the order and does it.

    Can the OP please enter the BIOS during system POST and find and reply with his current CPU frequency (speed) and current RAM timings, or please download CPUz and post a screenshot of those 2 values.

  16. I have never developed games before, and I really didn't knew how this flash player games work in the background. Thank you for the great explanation, I guess everyday we learn something new :)

  17. Yes my friend, flash player is basically an environment, as is JAVA and ActiveX. Flash files run within the environment, as do java scripts and activeX scripts run within their respective environments.

  18. Yeah, perfectly understood what you wanted to say :) I thought that the flash player does all the things and is not acting as a middle man, so I thought that may cause the lag. But, apparently, I have been wrong. :) Thank you for clarifying.

    PS. Sorry abut of topic, but when it comes to tech.. :D
